Background of the Study
Community-based organizations (CBOs) are vital actors in addressing environmental degradation at the grassroots level. In Orhionmwon Local Government Area, Edo State, various CBOs have emerged to combat environmental challenges such as waste mismanagement, deforestation, and water pollution (Okoro, 2023). These organizations play a critical role in mobilizing local communities, raising awareness, and implementing sustainable environmental practices. Their initiatives include tree planting, community clean-up exercises, and advocacy for stricter environmental policies. Despite these positive efforts, challenges such as limited financial resources, inadequate technical expertise, and weak government support often constrain their effectiveness (Uche, 2024). This study investigates the contributions of CBOs in mitigating environmental degradation, exploring how their efforts influence public behavior and policy formulation. By examining case studies and community outcomes, the research seeks to identify best practices and areas for improvement, ultimately proposing strategies to enhance the impact of CBOs on environmental sustainability (Okoro, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the proactive involvement of community-based organizations in Orhionmwon, environmental degradation continues to persist due to resource constraints and limited policy support. The challenges faced by CBOs in implementing effective environmental interventions have impeded progress toward sustainable development (Uche, 2024). This study aims to investigate the role and challenges of CBOs in addressing environmental issues, highlighting gaps in support and coordination that hinder their impact on environmental conservation (Okoro, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the contributions of CBOs in environmental conservation.
To identify challenges limiting the effectiveness of CBO interventions.
To recommend strategies to strengthen CBO efforts in combating environmental degradation.
Research Questions:
What roles do CBOs play in mitigating environmental degradation in Orhionmwon?
What challenges hinder their effective functioning?
How can policy and community support enhance their impact?
Research Hypotheses:
H1: CBOs significantly influence environmental conservation outcomes.
H2: Limited resources and technical support impede CBO effectiveness.
H3: Strengthening government-CBO partnerships will improve environmental outcomes.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it assesses the pivotal role of community-based organizations in environmental conservation. Its findings will guide policymakers and development partners in designing strategies that empower CBOs, enhancing community-led environmental interventions and promoting sustainable development (Okoro, 2023; Uche, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the role of community-based organizations in combating environmental degradation in Orhionmwon Local Government Area, Edo State. The study excludes other forms of institutional environmental interventions.
